To Whom It May Concern,
Los Exploradores Search and Rescue (L.E.S.A.R) is a 501-3c non-profit organization that performs search and rescue in the Imperial Valley for off-road District 38 races. Our all-volunteer group provides medical support to any racer or individual who may have medical issues during a race or who may need medical attention during our time at the event. We have several state-licensed EMTs, one RN, and numerous volunteers who are CPR/First Aid/AED first responders who provide services for these race deployments.
We have a triage trailer (aka LESAR Command Post) on-site at every race close to the finish line. The trailer is maintained and full of up-to-date medical trauma gear and supplies tailored to desert motorcycle, UTV, and quad racing. Gear includes (2) medical beds, air management equipment, wound care supplies, splints, and traction device equipment for sprains and broken bones. Vital sign equipment includes Pulse Ox monitors, Blood pressure cuffs, Stethoscopes, and A.E.D. for heart emergencies. We also have two off-road capable UTVs, which aid in transporting a patient who may need to be brought in on a backboard to the trailer for further evaluation. Both UTVs are equipped with a stokes basket, backboard, and trauma bag that is equipped with oxygen, suction, traction splint, pulse ox, dressings for wound care, c-spine supplies, and airway management gear. The Yamaha Viking (EMS2) is equipped with a Med Lite medical bed to ensure safe patient transportation to the medical trailer. The Arctic Cat (EMS1) becomes "Rescue1" for UTV race support with both fire suppression and rescue tools, which include a combo cutter/ spreader tool that has a hydraulic pump, pry bar, and special kit bags with fire jackets, Nomex flash hoods, safety glasses, and gloves, 2.5-gallon compressed air foam system, which produces 50 plus gallons of fire suppression foam. For backup, we have 3 20lbs. ABC fire extinguishers and 2 2.5-gallon water extinguishers with foam. LESAR will have trained personnel to meet the unique needs of responding to D38's class of UTV racing participants. In addition, both of our UTVs are equipped with Lowrance GPS systems to help locate patients using waypoints provided by sweep riders. Course coordinates and maps are provided to us in advance by the hosting club, which includes checkpoints, road crossings, and mile marker waypoints.
All personnel carry a radio, which monitors an emergency frequency for LESAR and transmits information to our command post, which is constantly monitored. The person in charge of the base radio keeps in constant contact with all LESAR personnel on the race course to get them to a downed rider within a short amount of time. We also contact the race officials through radio contact and/or runners. We have a list of cell phones, which are carried so that we have multiple options for reaching the necessary personnel. When indicated or advised by our in-field personnel, we immediately call 911 so that there is minimal downtime for the patient. By the time we have the patient packaged and en route to our triage trailer, an ambulance or an air ambulance, if needed, will be underway to meet them.
If any LESAR personnel come in contact with a racer who is having a mechanical problem, they will radio the rider's number to the LESAR command post, confirm the rider is hydrated, and make sure the nearest checkpoint is aware of the rider’s location and status. The LESAR command post will either notify the rider’s pits or the hosting club of the information.
Before each race, we correspond by email and phone with the hosting club’s race officials and all of our LESAR volunteers. We also ensure that the trailer is always staffed with qualified personnel during deployments.
If you have any questions or want further information, please contact us.
Thanks,
